Gardeners "Plant a Row" to help Forgotten Harvest feed Metro Detroit's hungry.
A group of local gardeners and a variety of other groups have joined forces to help feed Metro Detroit's hungry through the Plant a Row program begun nationally by the Garden Writers Association of America. Forgotten Harvest, English Gardens, Michigan State University Extension, and the Metro Detroit Flower Growers Association met recently to launch the 2003 program locally.
Plant a Row for the Hungry is a national grass roots effort encouraging gardeners in individual, community, faith-based and school gardens to plant extra vegetable seeds and plants in the spring and donate the surplus harvest to people in need.
During the growing season, backyard gardeners and those listed above all can bring their harvests to nearest English Gardens, the campaign's lead sponsor, where the food will be picked up by a refrigerated Forgotten Harvest van and delivered, same day, to emergency food providers in the tri-county area.
Free PAR kits can be obtained at area English Gardens locations. The kits include a brochure, row markers, seeds, and a list of drop-off sites throughout Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.
